‘Husband and wife should decide how many children to have’, role of Central Government
New Delhi: It is up to the husband and wife to decide how many children they should have. The central government has said that the government cannot put pressure on the citizens for population control. The government has clarified this role in its reply to the Supreme Court’s notice. The government has said it opposes the imposition of family planning on citizens.

‘Number of family members should be fixed in pairs’

Any restriction on giving birth to a certain number of children would be dangerous and would lead to demographic disorders. The family planning program in the country is optional. This will allow the couple to decide on the growth of their family members and adopt family planning methods as per their wishes. The central government has said in its affidavit filed in the Supreme Court that there should be no coercion in this.

Petition of BJP leader Upadhyay

The Center has made this clear while replying to a public interest litigation filed by BJP leader and lawyer Ashwani Kumar Upadhyay. During the hearing on the petition, the apex court had on January 10 this year issued a notice to the Center seeking a reply. Upadhyay had filed a petition in the Delhi High Court seeking further steps, including that every couple should have two children, to control the country’s growing population. His petition was rejected by the High Court. Upadhyay had challenged the High Court decision in the Supreme Court.

Affidavit of the Center

‘Public health’ is the prerogative of the states and the state governments should take appropriate and consistent measures to improve the health sector to protect the citizens from health related problems. The state government can work effectively in the health sector by making special interventions to control the implementation process of the plan and guidelines, the health ministry said in an affidavit from the central government.

Ashwini Upadhyay has written a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi requesting him to enact a population control law. He has also made a presentation on population control in the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) in 2018.
